John W. Boslego, MD
Rockville, MD – John W. Boslego, 74, unexpectedly passed away on August 6, 2022 at his home. He grew up in Hershey, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Vincent P. and Helen K. Boslego. After graduation from Hershey High School, he attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. graduating as Distinguished Cadet and commissioning as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He was selected for medical training and attended The George Washington University Medical School. He subsequently specialized in internal medicine and infectious diseases. After graduation he joined the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and then the Institute of Research (WRAIR), serving for some years as its Director in Bangkok, Thailand (AFRIMS) and eventually rising to the rank of WRAIR’s Deputy Director. After 25 years as an Army doctor, John retired as a colonel and was awarded the Army’s Legion of Merit. For the next 25 years he worked at Merck, PATH, and Takeda in private industry. There, his efforts contributed to significant advances in vaccines against a broad array of viral, bacterial and parasitic pathogens, most notably Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and, most recently, dengue fever. In May of 2022 he was honored with the West Point Class of 1970 “Serve With Integrity” Award, recognizing his embodiment of the school motto, “Duty, Honor, Country.”
John Boslego was a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, colleague, and friend who worked tirelessly to help make the world a healthier and safer place. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Melanie; four children; seven grandchildren; five siblings; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and by his son, Kyle.
